Job Duties
The summer job program at the Department of Health Professions (DHP) provides an opportunity to spend a summer working side-by-side with knowledgeable staff in an environment devoted to protecting the public. DHP consists of 13 health regulatory boards covering 62 professions, 3 programs (Prescription Monitoring Program, Health Practitioners Monitoring Program and the Healthcare Workforce data Center) along with all centralized services to support the department. Our mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice and providing information to health care practitioners and the public. Our headquarters is in Henrico, Virginia.
- Scan investigative reports and evidence for digital upload and records retention. This includes scanning closed cases concerning unlicensed practice, completing a quality assurance check of the scan, and uploading the scan to MLO following required naming conventions.
- Answer phones for the Enforcement Call Center. Maintain professionalism and answer questions accurately for citizens who call Enforcement regarding their complaints.
- Data entry and collection. As needed, update the status of cases in the licensing database (MLO).
- Correspondence. As needed draft letters for Enforcement Director signature.
- Additional duties as assigned. As needed, assist the Case Processing Support team (complaint processing) and Operations Support team (mail processing/quality assurance).
Eligibility: The DHP Summer Internship Program is primarily for undergraduate students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university with a minimum 3.0 GPA who are at least eighteen years of age at the time they begin the program. To be eligible, candidates must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents. A transcript, application, and cover letter will be required for all candidates.
Compensation: This is a paid summer wage position, with participants working approximately 30 hours a week for a ten-week period with a tentative start date of May 19, 2025 earning $18.00 per hour.

Selection: The DHP Summer Internship Program is highly competitive. Applications will be reviewed thoroughly and selections will be based on the quality of the complete application packet. Prospective candidates may be interviewed either in-person, over the phone, or virtually. Candidates may be required to undergo a writing or work sample. Selected candidates will be informed of their selection in April. Selected candidates will be required to complete an I-9 form and provide documentation of identity for employment purposes as well as attend orientation and complete all onboarding documents and tasks as any other wage position would, including a criminal background check and references
Minimum Qualifications
1. Considerable knowledge of administrative office procedures and practices, including file maintenance.
2. Effective oral and written communication skills.
3. Experience working with confidential information and maintaining confidentiality.
4. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to provide quality customer service to both internal and external customers.
5. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workflow to accomplish duties in an accurate and timely manner; Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
6. Skill in using Microsoft Office Suite.
7. Demonstrated ability to compose correspondence, written assignments, and reports requiring close attention to detail.
8. Ability to process and evaluate documents, and collect and maintain data (electronic, paper);
9. Ability to lift 30 – 35 pounds and meet other physical demands of position.
